Reviews

Every literary scene suffers potentially from parochialism and back-scratching. Every literary scene develops healthier if it is open to outside influence and feedback. Understanding this, Singapore Poetry wishes to capitalize on the distance between Singapore and the United States for the health of both literary cultures. We want Singaporeans to review American works of literature and vice versa. In this way, you don’t have to worry that you will run into the author you trash in your review at your neighborhood bodega or the nearest hawker center, but will give the honest-to-goodness review that is the life-blood of literary health. And because literary reviewing is so vital but often so thankless, we will pay USD50 for every review of 1500 – 2000 words. It’s not much, but it’s more than what you get in most places.

Choose a book from the list below, and we’d be happy to send it to you. We will be adding to the list as review copies are sent to us (publishers, send them!). Or pitch a book you wish to review. To get a sense of what we like, read Helaine L. Smith’s review of Shirley Geok-Lin Lim, Eric Norris’s review of Gwee Li Sui, and Cyril Wong’s review of Jennifer Tseng and Timothy Yu. They have different styles, but they are all opinionated, specific, and pleasurable to read. If you are new to SP, send us a sample of your reviews published elsewhere. Please inquire first before sending us a review. You can contact Jee at jkoh@singaporeunbound
